Olin Neuropsychiatry Research Center
Transforming a 19th Century building with limited floor-to-floor height as a state-of-the-art, 21st Century research facility was one of the many projects Tecton has completed for Hartford Hospital and its Institute of Living. The Magnet Room, incorporating a 3-Tesla MRI, is fully sound-isolated, containing the sound within it so it is not a distraction to the researchers as they seek to gain insight into the causal effects of schizophrenia through the use of cognitive applications. Design of the MRI Room included a separate pad with its own structural support and a “knock-out” wall for the installation, removal and replacement of the MRI.
Reclaiming areas previously occupied by a natatorium, handball courts and locker room, and combining that space with a former amphitheatre, allowed for an addition to accommodate all program requirements, including EEG Booths, Cognitive Assessment Area, Teleconferencing Facilities, Physician Offices, Treatment Rooms, Research Areas, Library and Lobby.
